Join us for celebrating Bharat's space odyssey — Chandrayaan 3 and beyond.
National Space Day 2024, IIT Mandi
This is the first ever National Space Day, after the Government of India declared August 23rd as the 'National Space Day' to honour the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which achieved a soft landing of the Vikram Lander at the 'Shiv Shakti' point and deployed the Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface on August 23, 2023. The celebration will take place on 23rd August 2024 at the beautiful campus of IIT Mandi, located in the serene Himalayan region of Himachal Pradesh, India.

The event will feature insightful keynote addresses by experts, informative exhibitions and videos, ingenious models and prototypes and exciting competitions for school and college students. We shall also arrange space for students to display their own posters and models to convey their interest and enthusiasm in space sciences and technology to the other attendees. It will provide a unique opportunity for the students to become aware of the importance and benefits of space exploration, recognize the significant achievements of India in space exploration and space technology and be inspired to contribute to our country's efforts to reach for the stars.

Exhibition

All day, 23 Aug, 2024

The event will feature a vibrant display of student posters, showcasing their creativity and knowledge in space science. Alongside these, various exhibitions will offer an immersive experience into the fascinating world of space exploration.

Opening Ceremony

09:00 to 10:00 am, 23 Aug, 2024

The ceremony will begin with the traditional lamp lighting, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and the pursuit of knowledge. This will be followed by Sarasvati Vandana.

Expert Talk

10:00 to 10:30 am, 23 Aug, 2024

The event will also include a talk by Prof. Arti Sarkar, an esteemed expert in the field. Her insights and experiences will inspire both students and attendees with her knowledge and passion for space science.

The event will feature an enlightening talk by Prof. J.S. Yadav. His presentation will delve into advanced topics in space research, offering attendees a deeper understanding of the complexities and innovations.

Competitions

02:00 to 05:00 pm, 23 Aug, 2024

The event will host a variety of engaging activities. Hackathon presentations will showcase innovative solutions and creative projects developed by students. Additionally, there will be essay and painting competitions. Student posters will be displayed, highlighting their research and creative work, while the Udankhatola project will provide an intriguing glimpse into its unique contributions.

Closing Ceremony

05:00 to 05:30 pm, 23 Aug, 2024

The event will culminate in a grand prize distribution ceremony, celebrating the achievements of participants across various competitions and presentations. This ceremony will honor the outstanding contributions and performances.

Stargazing

08:00 to 10:00 pm, 23 Aug, 2024

The event will include a stargazing session at the fountain area behind the auditorium. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the night sky through telescopes, guided by experts who will share fascinating insights about celestial objects and constellations.

Prof J S Yadav

Dr. J. S. Yadav is a distinguished researcher with extensive experience in space instrumentation. He worked at TIFR Mumbai from 1982 to 2018, contributing to key projects like the Anuradha instrument, the Gamma Ray Spectrometer on NASA's Mars Observer, and the Indian X-ray Astronomy Experiment. He led the development of the Large Area X-ray Proportional Counter (LAXPC) on India's AstroSat, launched by ISRO in 2015. The LAXPC has significantly advanced the study of neutron star and black hole X-ray binaries, leading to over 100 research publications.

Prof Bhalamurugan Sivaraman

Dr. B. Sivaraman is a professor in the Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics Division at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad. He holds a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the University of Madras and a Ph.D. in Astrochemistry from The Open University, UK. Dr. Sivaraman has made significant contributions to low-temperature astrochemistry and was awarded the INSA medal for young scientists in 2016. His research focuses on the physico-chemical changes in astrochemical ices and high-temperature astrochemistry. He also serves as a Visiting Lecturer at the International Space University in France.

Ms Arti Sarkar

Ms. Arti Sarkar is a Senior Space Scientist and Group Director at ISRO with over three decades of service. Her career at ISRO has been marked by significant contributions to numerous pioneering space missions and advancements in remote sensing and planetary science. With a strong academic background in Applied Optics from IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi, she has played a crucial role in the design and development of various electro-optical payloads for ISRO's Earth observation programs, including major missions like IRS, Oceansat, and Chandrayaan. Her work has been instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of space applications and exploration.

Dr Tarun Kumar Pant

Scientist 'G' is the Head of the Ionosphere Thermosphere Magnetosphere Physics Division at the Space Physics Laboratory, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, ISRO. His research focuses on optical and radio remote sensing, aeronomy, airglow emissions, and various atmospheric processes. With a professional background spanning from postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Toronto and Physical Research Laboratory to a research student role at Uttar Pradesh State Observatory, he has received notable awards including ISRO’s Team Excellence Award for the SOUREX mission and the Hari Om Ashram Prerit Vikram Sarabhai Award.

Solo, School (class 8 and below) Event

The upcoming Painting Competition invites participants to explore the theme of 'Science Fiction on a Space Mission.' The competition is open to students across various age groups, with categories for Nursery to 1, 2 to 5, and 6 to 8. All necessary papers will be provided for the creative journey. Get ready to launch your imagination into the cosmos and create your own visionary space mission!

Quiz

Team, School (class 9 - 12)/College Event

The quiz competition will be held separately for school and college students, with each team comprising two members. The theme will be Indian Space Mission & Space in General. This team-based event will test participants' knowledge across various topics, offering a challenging and collaborative experience for all.

Essay Writing

Solo, School Event

The essay writing competition will be a solo event open to both school and college students, with participants having the option to write in either Hindi or English. This format allows students to showcase their writing skills and express their ideas on various topics. The list of topics are:

  • Future of Indian Space Program
  • Origin and Fate of the Universe
  • Beyond the known Universe
  • Extraterrestrial Living Beings

Udankhatola

Team Event, Only for students of IIT Mandi

On the occasion of National Space Day, STAC is organizing a rocket launching event for 2nd year and above. There will be a maximum of 10 teams, which will be decided on a first-come first-serve basis. The team size will be of 3-4 students. The students will be making their rocket from scratch. The venue will be Hockey Ground, North Campus.

Hackathon

Team, College Event

Problem statement: Satellite Data Visualization. Develop a web or mobile app that visualizes real-time satellite data from ISRO. Integrate at least one type of dataset. Ensure a simple, user-friendly interface with basic map navigation. Include at least one basic data analysis feature, like trend analysis our data comparison. The app should update data in real-time.
